A look at the sightseeing boats operating on the islands and the cruises they offer.

There are many ways and means of transportation available to those meaning to explore the islands. But the thing is, some sights can only be seen from the sea. Fortunately, the local people are more than happy to show you around where no one can hike. So why not take up on the offer and hop on a sightseeing boat?

Here is a list of the best sightseeing cruises offered on the Oki Islands. All onboard and let’s go explore!

But if it’s the Red Cliff you can’t get enough of, then you are in for a treat too! Captain of the Sekiheki Sightseeing Boat will be glad to assist you on the quest to discover the dynamic coastal landscapes of Chiburijima Island. During the one hour cruise, you will see the marvels brought about by the joint forces of volcanic activity and erosion process, the latter at work for thousands upon thousands of years. The highlight is of course the Red Cliff itself, in all its glory. You wouldn’t know just by looking from the lookout, but it extends for approximately 1 km, painting the western coast with vibrant colours.

A cruise onboard AMANBOW offers two different experiences at the same time. When you take a seat on the deck, you will enjoy the blue sea and beautiful coastal views of the Dōzen Islands on the way to the Saburō-iwa Rocks and back to Hishiura Port. When the crew invites you to the observation room below the deck, you will be amazed by the underwater landscapes and abundant marine life on the other side of the glass. And if you’d like to know what it is that fish do after the sun sets, AMANBOW can also take you on a special night cruise.

The setting sun will “light up the candle”, creating the iconic sight. After a long day spent exploring the island, sit back and enjoy the spectacle of nature with a camera in hand, while the sightseeing boat crew will ensure that you get to snap a photo from every possible angle.

Kappa Sightseeing Boat, Okinoshima Town

Kappa Sightseeing Boat, Okinoshima Town

This cruise is probably one of the best ways to explore the area around Saigō Port. The friendly crew will show you all the points of interest scattered within Saigō Bay, either easy to miss or impossible to spot from onboard the ferries. Then, they will turn the boat around to sail up the Yabi-gawa River, all the way to Kappa Kōen Park – a place featured in a famous local legend. Looking at the rows of ships moored at the river banks – like cars parked in front of the houses –  you will thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere of a fishing village with all its charms.
