Day Okinoshima Town
9:30– 10:00 17 Visit the Oki Islands Geopark Museum and the Visitor Center.
10:00– 11:00 Rent a car and explore the Saigō area.
Tamawakasu-mikoto Shrine is the Oki Islands’ main general shrine. The main hall of the shrine was built in
1793 in the local Oki-zukuri style of architecture. Next to the shrine stands the massive Yao-sugi Japanese
Cedar, which is said to be around 2,000 years old and is designated a Natural Monument of Japan.
11:00– 13:00 18 Drive along the coast to Chichi-sugi Japanese Cedar. Although deep in the mountains, you can drive right
up to it.
Afterward, return the way you came and enjoy the coastal scenery of Jōdogaura Coast. Then, take a route
straight through the center of Dōgo Island to head back to Saigō Port.
You can stop by Kabura-sugi Japanese Cedar, one of Okinoshima Town’s famous cedar trees, alongside
Chichisugi Japanese Cedar and Yao-sugi Japanese Cedar.
We recommend parking your car at Chōshi Dam and taking a short walk if you have time. The dam's rocks
are made of Oki gneiss, formed when the Japanese archipelago was still part of the continent. This is one
of the key geological features that led to the Oki Islands' designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
13:00– 14:30 19 Have Oki soba noodles for lunch in the port area.
Relax in the rest area in the Geopark Visitor Center, shop for locally made souvenirs in Kyomiya Bunten (10
min from the port), Anki-ichi Market (2 min on foot from the port) or in the souvenir shop inside the ferry
terminal.
You can also stop by a café around the port or browse through some local shops. Around Saigō Port, you’ll
find bakeries and a shop that sells handmade scones as well.
15:10– Travel by ferry from Saigō Port in Okinoshima Town to Shichirui Port (Shimane Prefecture).
