Niwa-no-mai / Shūhaira (Uragō)

A colourful ceremony celebrating harvest and giving thanks.

Shūhaira, a traditional Dengaku dance developed to celebrate and pray for good harvest, is performed every year on Nishinoshima Island. The locals perform the ritual to worship and give thanks to 10 directions for prosperity, and the dance is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Bring a hat, an umbrella and drinks with you. The dance is performed on an outdoor stage, therefore it can be very hot on a sunny day.
