Walk along a dramatic coastline, visit a shrine designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and climb the sacred mountain, which appears in local legends!

This one-day trekking tour in Nishinoshima Town will take you to Matengai Cliff (Kuniga Coast), the most popular place on the island, and Mt. Takuhi, the highest mountain in the Dōzen Islands area. The tour starts in the morning and continues until the afternoon.

    Here are the tour highlights!
Trekking on Matengai Cliff, which is 257m high, will make you feel close to the sky. Kuniga Coast, where this cliff is located, is a large-scale sea-eroded landscape with numerous dynamic rock formations created by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan. The horses and cows grazing there and in the surrounding areas add to the unique atmosphere of the trail.

Mt.Takuhi, the highest mountain in the Dōzen area (452 m above sea level) located at the center of the Dōzen Caldera, became so famous in the Edo period (1603-1868) that it was even depicted in ukiyo-e woodblock prints by famous artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. Halfway up the mountain is the Takuhi Shrine, its 'honden' (main sanctuary where the enshrined deity resides) built half-hidden inside a cave, giving it a mysterious and powerful feel. The area features rich nature, with the rare flora and warm-season evergreen broad-leaved forest designated as a Natural Monument of Shimane Prefecture.

This tour will allow you to explore the unique flora and fauna of the Oki Islands’ ecosystem, experience the local culture and history, and understand how the land here was formed million of years ago.

Please let us know during the booking if you wish to have lunch at a local restaurant during the tour; we will book a recommended restaurant for you (the lunch fee is not included in the tour fee). During the tour, the guide will treat you to snacks and a homemade wild herb tea made with 'fukugi' (spicebush).
