Sitting atop a small hill, the Imperial Residence Site overlooks Beppu Port.
Emperor Go-Daigo was banished to the Oki Islands in 1332 and is said to have lived at this site for over a year before his escape. Located at the foot of the hill, known as Mt. Tennō, is Hekifū-kan Museum. The small museum contains exhibits related to Emperor Go-Daigo. The site is also popular for cherry blossom viewing in April.
