- Appearing in the "Engishiki" shrine list, this is a highly ranked shrine on Dōgo Island.
- This shrine is the main general shrine of the Oki Islands. The main hall of the shrine was built in 1793 in the local Oki-zukuri style of architecture. The roof is thatched, with chigi and katsuogi ornamental crossbeams, and suzume-odori wooden bars on top that give a dignified manner to its simplicity. The shrine's honden (main hall), the Zuishinmon gate at the shrine entrance, and the former hall of worship have all been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. You can receive the goshuin stamp for Tamawakasu-mikoto Shrine in the ticket window of Oki-ke Traditional Residence & Museum. If no one is present at the window, ring the bell. As you approach the shrine, you will notice a giant Japanese cedar tree, this is Yao-sugi, a tree that is estimated to be more than 1,700 years old. Every year on June 5th, an important festival called Gorei-furyu takes place in which eight sacred horses carrying the deities from eight different areas around the island gallop up through the shrine gates. This unique festival draws large crowds of locals as well as visitors from outside the island.
