Abstract-art-like rockface, a remnant of a volcanic activity that created the Dōzen Islands
Shimazushima Island is part of the outer rim of the Dōzen Caldera. The trachyte that has intruded into the sandstone rock, rare in the Oki Islands, creates a beautiful wine-colored gradation pattern on the white rock surface. These patterns have many shapes, such as those that spread out like wings, and those that look like ripples after a water drop falls. Dendrites, which resemble seaweed fossils, are mineral crystals that form in a similar way to snow crystals. Many dendrites are dark in color and have a fuzzy shape, and it is quite rare for them to have such a distinct shape, making the well-formed ones prized as decorations overseas.
